Powerful Stuff Right There

I was writing today and this song
came to me

I remembered Johnny Cash singing this heart breaking song
but I didn't remember what it was called
I found the music video of this amazing rendition of
Hurt
by Trent Razner/ Nine Inch Nails
These lyrics, this song
is a bare knuckled one two
and one of the best pieces of contemporary literature
I have read.

Johnny had aged in the video some
he'd become
frail
and he sang this song
this dying man's declaration
and accusal
hammering out
on fret and key
the deepest kind of truth
and when I was listening to this
it hit me
this was a part of the conversation I had been having with life

and I felt
discovered

I realized why this song had pulled so hard on me today
Some times life was talking to me
and some times I was talking back to life
To the past
The remembered and
The forgotten…

Hurt
By Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails
Performed by Johnny Cash

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
but I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
the feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here.

What have I become?
my sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away in the end
You could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way...
